Alone-Project 3

Her is the Link to Soundcloud

This project presents many elements, but ultimately, it is a self-exploration that considers how we perceive the world and how that can change. For mine, it could change by simply taking your headphones out and sitting completely alone.

While the Quad would not be relevant for everyone, this piece is tailored for college students on a college campus. Essentially, the quad has two purposes. The first is the actual set up of the quad. We will be seated along the perimeter of the rectangular shape of grass which is surrounded by a pathway on every side. You can loop around on the same path forever, or you could chose to follow it until you break off to go towards different parts of campus. What we are doing in my project is stepping off that path, just slightly, so that we are able to observe. Looking, there are so many options. You could immediately chose a path. You could fail to decide and walk around the rectangular path over and over. You could chose a path you dislike. You could come back from a path you chose and start again. Those are just some of the options left to anyone on a path that is unstructured and uncertain beyond the rectangle. The second element is that the quad is the center of the University.  It is old and green and acts as a landmark and a passage to almost any part of campus. It is almost like the heart of the university, surrounded by all possible options while it pumps students to each of them

The content of the audio is somewhat minimal. A quarter of it will be complete silence. Because this is about how we perceive the world, and ourselves, and how that can change with simple ideas and acts, I chose to select random pages from books for when there is movement or adjustment. It is confusing; I don't say what I am doing or why I am speaking these words. It is completely out of context. I know that each person will perceive this differently than I, since I have read the entire novel. When we are alone with the ability to just observe people, that is was people become to us: a random page in a book. This carries over that the more you read, the more books you'll understand. Comparatively, the more you observe, the more you will be able to understand the world and people around you, and, consequently, the more you will be able to understand yourself.

This practice will force you to do something that is so easy to avoid: sit alone is complete silence. With this, you are forced to face yourself. Your thoughts. You are forced to unplug and sit in something that has become so uncomfortable for so many.

So, let's begin.
