Gallery Paper

Gallery: Joan Arrizabalaga             Arrizabalaga currently holds many pieces in the University of Nevada, Reno’s gallery. While she works in many mediums, some of the most astonishing and unique pieces that caught my eye in this gallery are the stonework sculptures she created. Of these stoneware creations, I chose Shiva, Goddess of Luck to analyze and understand in this paper.             This piece hangs on the wall as a shiny stone sculpture. Its unique shape and content immediately caught my eye.  The central part of the sculpture is comprised of a slot machine shape. The shape shows where you can insert the money at the top, the three slots that are randomly rolled, and where the money can come out.  While most of it is covered in a pearly white, it has bright yellow bars of color, as well as bright red cherries, which are a common symbol of gambling, pain...

Performance Art: India Salvor Menuez

This artist works in many different mediums, but I will be focusing on her performance art.  She created Luck You, which performs and creates in various galleries. She also combines video and direct performance with her character Chibi Cherry, an entertainer. You get to explore different aspects of Chibi's life with an overwhelming surreal and strange tint to the videos and performances. For much of her performance art, she uses her body as part of the art. Considering that she does modeling on the side to support herself, it is interesting that she chose to make her art similar to her career. With performance, she is using her physical being in order to create art. Overall, I enjoyed her work because she completely commits to these strange roles and, by doing so, her work is almost liberating to the viewer. Project 1: Sounscape

For this project, I wanted to capture the difference between the "sound" of media and outside voices and how they can be distorted in our minds.  Because of this, it begins very loudly and is disorienting. Comparatively, the second part of the soundscape is when you are able to turn away from media and external opinion and look only to yourself and your surroundings. While both media and silence are powerful and can be positive, this is meant to display when you are presented with too much outside of yourself.  Listen to it here
